Famous London airports: a world in its own
Keeping the 2012 Summer Olympics in mind, nearly all the airports in London are getting a facelift. The facelift will not only enhance the design, but will allow these airports to handle more air traffic. The major airports such as Lupton, Heathrow, Gatwick, Standsted and London City are all used for commercial and general aviation.
Until 1966, Heathrow airport was known as London airport. One of the busiest and biggest airport in the world, it is located 12 miles west of central London. It started operating on the year 1929 and has gradually transformed it self in to a world class airport, with best of infrastructure and passenger amnesties. As for Gatwick, it is the second largest airport after Heathrow. It lies 28.4 miles south of central London. Most of the airlines do have regular connecting flights to Gatwick.
With Standsted and London city airports, it generally acts a hub for low cost European airlines.
Luton London airport is the fourth largest airport and is usually used as base for airlines such as Ryanair, Thomson airways, Easy Jet and Monarch Airlines. All the airports are run Operated by British Airport Authority (BAA) and are quite strategically located.
